Easy Ways to Increase Your Search Engine Ranking

It's believed that at least 85% of people looking for
something online, use search engines such as Google, Yahoo
and MSN. It therefore makes sense to get your website
ranked in the search engines, to enable these searchers, to
find it.
Some webmasters have spent a great deal of time and money
studying search engine optimization, and learning what the
search engines require from a website, for it to rank
highly. Others take a more relaxed approach, but all
webmasters have to consider search engine ranking to some
extent. Even making some small adjustments to your web pages
can improve your rankings quite rapidly.
Here are some easy ways to make small changes to your
website that the search engines will love.
1. The title bar on your homepage and other pages.
The words which appear in the title bar of your homepage
should include your main keyword or phrase, which ideally
will also be your company name.
The title bar on every page of your site should also
contain the most important keyword and phrases, for that
particular page. Avoid long strings of keywords, keep them
to six words or less. Do not repeat keywords more than
once in the title bars, and ensure that identical words are
not next to one another.
2. Website Content
Search engines love good content, even mire than graphics.
The content of each page must contain the keywords that
people are using, when they do a search on the engines, in
order for them to land on your website.
Each web page should contain approximately 250 words of
content, but if your design doesn't allow for this much,
try for at least 100 words. This is essential to achieve
good search engine rankings. Also, the search engines must
be able to read the text, which means the content should be
in html format. It should be remembered that search engines
cannot read graphics, so any content on a webpage which is
contained in a graphic, will not be visible to the search
engines.
3. Meta Tags
At one time, it was thought that meta tags held the key to
search engine rankings, but nowadays their relevance is
less. They are, however, still worth using correctly.
To view meta tags, you need to see the source code of a
webpage, the underlying code which creates the site. If
there are meta tags, they generally appear near the top of
the window. For example, a meta tag would read: meta
name="keywords" content=. If a code such as this does not
appear, ask your webmaster to install it. If doing it
yourself there are free softwares online which will produce
meta tags for you. While they will not greatly help your
search engine ranking, every little helps.
4. Link Popularity
Almost all search engines use link popularity to rank
websites. Link popularity is based on the quality of the
sites you have linked to, from your site. Linking with high
quality sites will not only assist the ranking of your own
site, but will also help to provide good quality traffic,
too.
To find out what links you already have you can do a search
in a main search engine, by typing in "free link popularity
check". The result will show all the sites which have links
with your site. If you don't have many, or they are low
quality, it would be a good idea to do a campaign and build
up the number and quality of the links.
When searching for sites to exchange links with, remember
that the site should be relevant to your own, and
preferably have as high a ranking as possible. This will
ensure that the search engines will consider the links
relevant and rate your site accordingly.
Search engine rankings are extremely important to your
website. More quality customers will be directed your way
if you have higher search engine ranking. But before
employing a search engine optimization expert, try making
the easy changes above, which will boost your ranking.
