Pitfalls To Avoid In the Software Business

The software business is an incredibly lucrative
business... in fact one of the largest companies in the
world has made most of its profit purely from selling
software. Even though as an entrepreneur or internet
marketer delving into this business seems like a good idea
it has a lot of risk especially when using outside or third
party programmers. The good news is by keeping a few golden
rules in mind you can avoid the pitfalls and make sure your
outsourced programming projects can done on time and with
minimal bugs.

Testing This cannot be stressed enough, end users of a
program will find ways to take a program to the limits in
ways you never thought possible. Programmers also think
whatever they produce is perfect the first time, the mix of
these two elements will often cause a lot of grief with
customers and rework (rework is waste and costs money!) of
the software to fix problems that would have been uncovered
with sufficient testing. Before going live with anything
get some beta testers!

Feature Creep Scope creep will at worst doom a new product
from ever being completed and at best keeps it from being
delivered in any sort of cost effective and timely fashion.
Start by drafting up a very bare bones, no frills set of
specs the software needs to accomplish. Once you commit to
a set of specs and coding has begun do not change the specs
or try to squeeze in any enhancements.

Input validation Never ever expect someone to enter
anything correctly, this goes hand in hand with testing. If
you don't hard code something into the program you are just
asking for trouble, simple things like error proofing and
data scrubbing input fields are a huge plus. An example of
this would be to not allow a user to enter letters into a
field for numbers. Taking it a step further having said
number field default with a properly formatted number like
"00.00" instead of all blanks is another great way of using
poka-yoke.

Out of all these I think most software stumbles by allowing
feature creep. If you're going to solicit user feedback for
enhancements then instead of adding all of them pick the
top one or two items to implement. Another time this often
occurs in is during beta testing, when testing the software
don't try to incorporate any new features into the software
even though one user will swear up and down they have to
have feature x, save those enhancements for the next
product revision cycle.

When Was the Last Time You Upgraded Your Business?

It seems that we constantly have to upgrade our computer
software and equipment. We only use our programs and computers
several months before it sometimes makes good sense to replace
them. It's not that they're completely obsolete; it's just that
there's usually something much better and often for only a bit
more cost.

Do you treat your business model that way? Not very often. If
you're lucky enough to find a business model that works, you
usually keep on using it--to your detriment--with little
modification.

Why should your business be any different than the tools and
equipment you use? It's critical that you make regular changes
that will keep pace with your customers, your competitors and
the market.

Business is changing more rapidly than ever before. What worked
last year may not work any longer. Entire industries are
emerging and fading in less than a decade. To be competitive,
you must be able to change with everything else that's changing
around you.

Tweaking and improving what you already have may be sufficient.
But often you need to make more radical changes. Your business
model must sometimes be scrapped and replaced with another.

Some Obstacles It's easier to keep doing what you're doing. We
are all creatures of habit, and we have a tendency to dig holes
deeper instead of digging new holes. This keeps us focused on
what we're doing but not necessarily what we're attempting to
accomplish.

You may think making a change labels what you WERE doing as
wrong. Your stakeholders expect consistency. They don't like
change any more than you do. And most business leaders are
reluctant to let go of the old way and embrace the new because
they fear being judged as having been doing it wrong.

The staff doesn't like change. The owner or manager who is
willing to lead and affect change often has a tough role because
of a we've-always-done-it-this-way mentality. This resistance is
a serious challenge.

Customers don't ALWAYS know what's best. Listening to your
customers and attempting to fulfill their needs is a valuable
practice. Certainly you need to help your clients solve problems
and overcome challenges. But you can't DEPEND on your customers
for this. If you do, you'll miss many opportunities to lead the
market with products and services that your customers didn't
even know they wanted.

A Few Solutions Embrace change as a good thing and not just
something to be tolerated. As long as you make what you were
doing wrong, you thwart your ability to make good decisions.
When you lock onto the old, you have little ability to welcome
the new. Even a trapeze artist has to let go of one trapeze in
order to catch the next one. Develop the attitude that you're
making an improvement instead of merely not doing what you did
before.

Nurture a culture of creativity and innovation. A world class
business leader knows that they must create an environment for
creativity. They know they need to always reward thinking
outside of the box. The safety to question anything and
everything is paramount.

Conduct 'What's Not World Class' Meetings. On a regular basis,
small groups and large should be convened to challenge what's
being done, what's not being done and how it's done. Every
aspect of the business must be looked at with a fresh eye and an
open mind. What needs to be scrapped? What needs to be added?
What no longer serves your customer? Where are you looking good
and where are you looking bad? Establish priorities and take
action.

Make a habit of holding these meetings and you'll start to see
real progress. You'll find that the process will continue even
after the formal meeting ends.

Recognize that your biggest expense is the money you DON'T make.
Every business leaves money on the table. It's your job to
discover ways in which you can maximize all of your revenue.
There's always a way to do this. Pretend your company is being
bought by another corporation--what are some things they might
do to uncover hidden revenues?

Step back and away from your business and your industry.
Critical to creating a world class business is to constantly
gain new perspectives on what you do and how you do it. Abraham
Lincoln once said, "If I had three hours to chop down trees, I'd
spend two hours sharpening my blade." That's what getting away
to conferences, symposiums, classes and master mind meetings can
do for you--sharpen your upgrade blade.

Read, study, listen, explore. Take every chance to expose
yourself to new ideas and be reminded of things you already
know. And don't make it exclusive to your industry. If you're
clear on your mission and your purpose as well as the major
problems you're striving to solve, you'll get ideas from
anywhere and everywhere. Read something unrelated to your work.
Study something dramatically different from what you normally
do. See for yourself how your perspective will improve.

Keep what works and change what doesn't. Stay fresh and have a
better perspective and yet remain consistent with the things
that support your mission.

Being a business leader requires you to constantly balance the
unchanging principles with strategies that need to be tweaked
and updated. Constant and never-ending improvement is the
watchword of business in the 21st century.

I urge you to look for what systems, models, departments,
processes--and yes, even people--need upgrading.

In starting an internet firm the most troubling part of the
expedition can be contemplating what to sell or provide and
determining what type of advertising to implement. Loads of
options are present, yet, the fastest results are always
yielded through pay per click. Yahoo, Google and MSN all
present varying options of this marketing and each can be
posted rather quickly. As a new business owner, it can
certainly be difficult to be certain that you have all of
the required knowledge to make the proper choices. After
all if the wrong keywords are selected it is rather easy to
part with your hard earned money and make nothing in return.

Upon choosing the product or service that your business
will provide, as an owner you must take the purchasing
cycle of the consumer into mind when considering keyword
choices. Most commonly, customers that are ready to take
the plunge and purchase will search with a long winded
phrase. The consumer that searches with a long phrase is
one who has done their research and is now in the buying
phase of the cycle. As a business owner you will want to
select keywords that a buyer would search with so put
yourself in their shoes. What would they type when looking
to buy your product?

Start out by selecting a batch of these phrases as coming
up with only one or two will not be enough. Upon selecting
your batch of potential phrases you will want to see what
sort of competition exists in the search engine you will be
using. A quick and dirty way of doing this without any
specialized software will be to search with quotations. In
order to do this you will simply put quotes around your
phrase. If you are selling basketballs, you will want to
create a specific phrase and enter it like this "pink
women's basketball".

What does searching with quotations do? It will provide you
with a number of results showing you exactly how many
articles or web pages have been created around these
phrases you have created. If you are trying to create a web
based business opportunity through niche marketing or
target marketing, you will want to take heed in selecting a
phrase that brings back results beyond ten thousand. As you
can get cheap targeted clicks, the exact thing that any
business owner looks for.

On the other hand, be absolutely certain that the search
outcome is greater than a thousand, as there is no point in
using a search phrase that no one looks for. While you are
looking at the number of results, take a peek at the other
pay per click advertisements that show up. Do you notice
there are a few sponsored ads? Excellent, there should be
as if there are not then again there are most likely not
many searches completed with your phrase. The trick is
finding a balance between a searchable phrase with low
competition and a specific phrase that has no competition.
You need some searches and low competition plain and simple.

Select highly specific key word phrases that bring back
results between one thousand and ten thousand and you will
be able to pay only a moderate amount per click. Your web
based business opportunity will receive highly targeted
traffic rapidly. Even better than just highly targeted
traffic is the lower expense you will have to pay in order
to get it.

several improvements. She is waiting on some space in a
long term care facility and there maybe she can use her

It's all too easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle
of everyday life and forget to do those *basic* things that
create results in our lives.

Yet it is the basics of life, and business, that create
reliable and predictable results.

Today many are having a hard time finding true success
online. Everyday I hear from people who make a few dollars
here or get a check there but have yet to find that stable,
reliable passive income stream they were hoping for.

When I dig a little deeper into their situation, I find
they have three things in common.  These are the common
denominators of their demise online.

1. They believe the hype, falling for the lie that others
will do the work for them and they need make no effort.

2. They are constantly looking for the next big thing,
focusing on products and programs that are in pre-launch or
are so new that their success simply cannot be predicted.

3. They spend all their money on one program and have
nothing left when that program fails them.

But the #1 thing they fail to do is this -- they do not
begin focusing on the basics NOW and put time on their
side.

I've actually had people cry on the phone when I asked them
where they thought they would be today if they had only
done a few basic things when they first came online.

Understand that I'm NOT casting stones here - I fell for
the same things, wasting money and time I could not afford
to lose when I first came online.

So, what can you do NOW that is rock-solid, proven to work,
and will put time on your side?

What can you do today that will help your efforts tomorrow
and every day the sun rises?

Now is the time to think about what you are doing online
and ensure that you are using EVERY tool to it's maximum
advantage.

One of those tools, perhaps the most powerful, is email.

You email every day right now, and email is the tool that
is easiest to learn to use.

So that's where you start.

Use this short checklist to ensure that you are taking full
advantage of the power of email and, by so doing, making
time your ally, not your adversary.

Fast, easy, and free, the consistent use of email in the
follow six areas will yield powerful results for you.

1. CUSTOMER FOLLOW UP

Whether it's a simple as a one-time 'thank you' or as
elaborate as a 50 message follow up system, customers love
to know you care.  At a minimum, send one message thanking
customers for every order.

To power up this idea, create a follow up system using your
favorite autoresponder and offer your customer more chances
to buy.  Keep messages short and no more than two per week.

2. CUSTOMER LEARNING

Do you offer a product that takes a bit of learning to use?
Teach your customers how to get the benefits they deserve
from your product or service via email.

Keep messages on topic and separate your follow up series
into bite-size learning pieces.  These follow up messages
can bring your refund rate to near zero ... a good thing
indeed.

3. PRE-SALES SERIES

How often do *you* buy the first thing you see?  Comparison
shopping is the way of the Internet, and getting
prospective customers to return to your site is the
challenge.

A pre-sale series is the answer!

This is actually very easy to do.  Just write down the top
ten reasons why someone should buy from you, then put each
in a follow up message.  Send one a day until they are all
delivered.

Offer the series to everyone who visits your site and let
time do the selling work for you!

Our experience has been that up to 40% of visitors will
take your free information if you do a good job of selling
the idea.

4. SPECIAL PRICING AND OFFERS

Use email to deliver insider information on special
bargains, limited time pricing, and more.  Much like a
coupon sheet in your local newspaper, selling advertising
in this type of email is a breeze.

5. HARD TO FIND NEWS

Give the people what they want!

People love offbeat news, especially when it has a
connection to their lives.
