Dog link Dog World: Website Linking strategies -The No Follow Tag

For a site to get long term free traffic from the search
engines. Understanding of website linking strategies needs to
be applied. This strategy needs to fit with your business model
and must be sustainable over time. Traffic from some links,
takes time to develop.

At this time, Google owns the 'search engine' playing field for
traffic. The majority of webmasters approach a linking strategy
purely for SEM (Search Engine Marketing). More links to a site
is a key when looking to get found in Google

The overall goal should be traffic results based, not purely
for search engines.

Links can take anything up to six months to show up. An example
that would help indirectly with search marketing would be
Wikipedia.

This free online library allows edits to apply external links
to the bottom its pages. The site has a many million pages and a
vast amount of traffic

Now Wikipedia has applied the 'no follow' HTML tag on its
external page links to stop it being abused by some webmasters.
This can be seen on any site using this process, by the
following steps:

1. Highlight the link by left mouse and holding
2. Right mouse the link and look at the properties.

The text "Nofollow" can be seen in the properties

The no follow tag means Page Rank (or Reputation - PR) will not
be passed on to your site and Google will not count it as a
link. To Quote Wikipedia:

"nofollow" actually tells a search engine "Don't score this
link" rather than "Don't follow this link."

However many of the Wikipedia pages rank very high on Google,
and features as a trusted authority site which has power in all
search engines. So is likely to send traffic which is really
what you are looking for anyway.

At the same time, different engines treat these links
differently. In a recent interview with the Yahoo director of
search, they have stated that the link will be followed to the
site, however the details of the link will not be passed on,
simply that your site will be found.

There is an easy way to identify these types of links, if you
use the Web Browser, Firefox which I highly recommended. It is
a good alternative to Internet Explorer as its very clean and
easy to use.

It has an Search Engine Marketing add on which, when installed
and turned on, it will show you the no follow links highlighted
in red.

Also, while searching in Google, it will show a large amount of
information on links to the listings, age of the site, alexa
ranking etc.

Another method that has been used to acquire links, is that of
posting comments on blogs. This has resulted in a rash of
posting comments only for return links. Wordpress, one of the
most used blog open source software platforms, has made all the
comment links no follow in order to combat this.

In conclusion, there are many effective linking strategies, for
marketing online at the same time the development of goals with
an overall plan for the development of these goals should be
applied.

of deliberation made what I think is an excellent business

iCop for a long time. Like everything else I have kicked it
around till it wouldn't let me sleep till I done what my
conscious thought was the right thing to do.

The International Online Council of Online Professionals is
an organization of people just like me who are trying to
preserve the integrity of business on the net.

J.L.Scot PHD is the director of this organization and I
think or at least in my opinion leading the group to
protect that integrity.

article about solo ads would be worth reading. But, solo
ads are still incredibly powerful.

Forward a Good Joke
by Bob Osgoodby

Don't you just hate it when you get a joke, or something else
has been forwarded 80 skillion times and you have to wade
through page after page of email addresses to finally get to it?

Some email messages are worth forwarding, and if many people
share that opinion, many will forward a particular message, and
they in turn will forward it to many other people. Most email
programs insert the headers including To: and often Cc: by
default when you forward a message.

But including all header information with all the other To: and
Cc: recipients has overwhelming disadvantages. The message looks
horrible, and often the actual content is buried and hard to
find between all the email address. Also you are sharing all the
email addresses with third parties without the consent of the
address owners.

Well folks, the people who forward it that way are either lazy,
don't care or, possibly, don't know any better.

If you want to forward something to those in your address book,
don't just forward it to them because their going to get all
that other junk as well. Do it this way:

Copy the joke - here's how - highlight what you want to copy -
place your cursor at the start of the joke and while holding
down your CTRL Key, move the cursor to the end of the joke, then
depress the letter "C". Alternatively you can go to edit at the
top left of the screen and select "Copy."

Then - start a new email and address it to someone (preferably
yourself). Place your cursor in the BCC area and select
the addresses you wish to send it to from your address book.

Alternatively, some email packages allow you to have multiple
email addresses under one heading. If that is the case, simply
enter a title for the list, and place all the addresses under
that one title. Then, when you are writing or forwarding
something, you only have to address it to that list, and none of
the other recipients addresses that you are sending it to will
be shown.

Finally - go to the body of the email and paste in the joke.
Hold the CTRL Key down and depress the letter "V" or go to edit
at the top left of the screen and select "Paste." Now, none of
the other addresses will be shown - only the joke.

Now my second beef with you "ne'er do wells" <G> - why do you
insist on sending things that have short lines and >>> in front
of each line? That is really sloppy. If it is worth forwarding
to your friends, don't send something that really looks junky.

First - get rid of all those >> thingys - paste it your Notepad
(we all have it guys) and go to Edit on the top left bar and
select replace. In the "Find What" box enter > and in the
"Replace With" box - leave that blank. Then Hit the "Replace
All" Button and all those thingys have gone away.

Copy what is left. Now if the lines are all jaggy and of
different lengths, go to my web site at ...

... where you will find a line length formatter. Paste the joke
there, select a line length and hit "Format." Then depress "Copy
to Clipboard" and then paste it into the body of the email you
are sending. If all the lines have been placed in one paragraph,
simply hit "Select All" and paste it in again. Then, place a
blank line between each line and it will format properly. If
there are two or more blank lines between each paragraph, simply
delete them.

Walla - for a few minutes extra effort, you now have a
professional looking email. You may wish to save the web
address http://adv-marketing.com/business/formatter.htm to your
favorites.

Bottom Line - if something is worth being forwarded - do it
right. And here is the best part - if you forward this to all
your friends that you correspond with by email, you'll never
have to wade through all that "gobble de gook" again either.

Welcome to all of our new subscribers!:)

I need to spend these comments apologizing for my
publishers comments in my Wednesday edition. I have done
this before but it has been a long time and I am not making
excuses for my shoddy work but I didn't run a spell check
on my comments and they went out with a lot of errors in
there. Sorry!:)

I would like to tell you it will never happen again but it
probably will. I have this nagging defect, I am human and
all of us make mistakes. Maybe I won't make as many next

The SEO Bible

In SEO, some things can be considered basics. These basics
apply to every site, and they work whether you are doing it for
your own site or for 200 clients.

These are the things that need attention, to be focused on and
applied to each project. No matter how involved a strategy for
a specific project may be (or may become over time) without
these basics being applied every time, the chances of success
for any technique or tactic is greatly diminished.

The very first thing that must be determined to be present
before even the basics can be implemented is the design of the
site...

It must be clean, appealing to the eye, fast to load and easy
to navigate. It can have no broken links, graphics, scripts or
programs. Everything on a page should have a reason for being
there, and if it does not work properly, it needs to be fixed
or removed before moving forward.

Also, there must be contact information, either on the index
page or no more than one level down. It must include the
registered company name, (or the individual's name who is
responsible for the site), a physical address with street,
city, state, country and postal code. A phone number that is an
actual business number and not only a mobile number,
(additional numbers such as fax and mobile are fine but only
AFTER the business number), and a legitimate email address.

Without these things, the search engines trust in the site will
be diminished. Not to mention the customers! Trust is
everything and it starts with the first thing a visitor, (or
search engine or directory editor), sees when coming to a site.
One of the things they want to see is that you can be
contacted. It's good business and there is no excuse for not
having this information clearly available.

Everyone needs to decide which is more important to them, not
getting any spam mail or talking with people who want to do
business with them. No brainer.

Once you are satisfied with the design and layout of the site,
then it is time for the 10 basics. Below are the 10 basic steps
that need to be followed every time.

Step #1 - Keywords

Whether the content is being written by you or supplied by
someone else, the first step is to develop a small set of very
tightly focused keywords and phrases that makes sense to the
reader, that are not just stuffed with keywords and that lead
the reader to take an action we want them to take, whether it
be to make a purchase or click a link for more information.

Step #2 - URL

Use your top level theme for the URL extension. If the page is
about property investment, you may want to name the page
domain.com/invest_property.htm, for example.

Step #3 - Title

Place the target term in about 10 to 15 words into the title
tag. Make sure the title tag makes sense because this is the
one thing that we can count on search engines displaying. This
is all we have to "SELL" the visitor to a search engine.

There is no point in doing all the work and paying all the
expense associated with being in the top 10 of Google if no one
ever clicks on our link. The title tag is what gets the
placement and gets the click.

Step #4 - Meta Description Tag and Meta Keyword Tag

These tags have VERY little, if anything, to do with placement
benefit with the major search engines today. The description
tag has much more value than the keyword tag because at least
snippets of the description tag can appear in the listing at
search engines and that gives us another chance to sell the
visitor to click on our link.

But, we have very little control over what gets displayed by
whom and when. Still, it is important to place your target
terms in the description tag but, again, the first rule is to
make sure the sentence makes sense to the reader. Keep the meta
description under 250 characters.

Google, MSN and Yahoo all place VERY, VERY little value on the
meta keyword tag because it has been spammed so badly by so
many people over the years, (and still is), that they have all
learned to place little, if any, value on the tag.

However, many smaller engines and directories do still read the
tag so it does have some value even if only a little. There is
no need to ever repeat any keyword or phrase in the meta
keyword tag. Get your main target terms in the tag separated by
commas, and let it go at that.

Step #5 - H Tags

H tags are kind of like chapters in a book or paragraph
headings. A search engine assumes that the H tag describes the
information the visitor is about to read. This makes H tags
important.

Be sure to put tightly focused variations of your main
keyword/phrase term in your H tags at the beginning of
appropriate paragraphs. It is a good idea to bold them and make
them larger than the rest of the text without diminishing the
design integrity of the page.

Step #6 - Keyword Density

You want the keywords you are targeting on the page, BUT the
single most important factor is to make sure the text on the
page makes sense to a visitor and does not repeat the target
terms simply for the sake of hoping to place high in search
engines. Search engines have been familiar with this trick for
a long time and it can do more harm than good.

Repeating your target terms more than is needed in simple one
to one conversation can get your page, (and even the entire
site), penalized or at least cause the engines to not trust
your site as much as it would have.

Stay focused on the topic in accordance with the title tag and
H tags, and pay more attention to getting the reader to respond
than to trying to impress a search engine. Measure your keyword
density by measuring the quality of the conversation you would
be having with another human being if you wanted them to buy
your service.

Step #7 - Alt Image Tags

These have very little influence over any search engine,
however, the point of this tag was to tell people with graphics
turned off, (back when bandwidth was very hard to come by) what
was supposed to be in the box with no picture it in. It doesn't
hurt to describe the graphic in the alt tag using your target
term. Do not try to stuff this tag or you lose that
all-important trust with the engines.

Step #8 - Internal Linking and Anchor Text

Make sure any page is linked to from no more than two levels
deep from the index page.

This is what gets the new page spidered and indexed quickly.
There are other ways, of course, but this is the easiest and
the path of least resistance. Also, there are few links you can
get that will do more for this new page than the one you
control from the index page.

Make sure the text within the href tag includes the target
term. That is called anchor text. Again, don't repeat the
anchor text to a lot of your interior pages using the same
terms. It makes no sense to build multiple pages about the
exact same thing, it looks spammy, (because it is), you lose
trust. Again, the most important thing is that it actually and
accurately describes the content on the page you are linking
to.

Also, embed links to other pages within the domain in the
content of this page when and only IF appropriate and it
provides a better user experience. Use anchor text that is
appropriate to the page being linked to.

Step #9 - External Linking

It is important to link out from this page to content that
supports the content of this page and actually provides some
value to the visitor related to the topic of this page. If it
doesn't enhance the users experience or help to lead them to an
action we want them to take, then don't link to something else
thinking it will improve your placement.

Also, remember that you place a link to somewhere else, if
visitors go somewhere else, there is no guarantee they will
come back. Don't throw away our prospects.

Step #10 - Inbound Links from Other Domains

Finally, links are what makes the whole thing work. The single
most important factor in determining rank in search engines is
the inbound links to a certain page. You want as highly trusted
inbound links as you can get.

You want the majority of inbound links pointing to the index
page with themed variations of the primary target term. Follow
the 80/20 principle knowing that 80% of the inbounds should
point to the index page providing 80% of the available "link
juice" that can be spread throughout the site.

Then, 20% pointing to interior pages with the anchor text
identifying the specific content of that interior page.
Remember that any site linking into you is only going to do it
because they feel this page presents value to THEIR visitor.
You can't expect a link to the page if there is little content
of any quality.

It is not a good use of your time to attempt to secure inbound
links to every interior page you create. Follow the 80/20
principle keeping in mind that this is a very broad guideline.
Sometimes you want links going to interior pages and it is
important enough to the success of the overall strategy that
you need to spend more time on some interior pages.

Step #11 - Get TRUSTED Inbound Links.

Where do we get them?

Anywhere and anyhow the client's budget allows. Below are some
suggestions and could be considered the basics of link
building.

Develop a signature tag that IS NOT SPAMMY to use in profiles
when submitting articles, forum posts, blog comments, wiki
contributions, digging stories, etc.

Always remember the internet Golden Rule. The more we give, the
more we get. So, never try to spam any place! If you cannot say
something helpful to someone else, contribute to the quality of
the site or say something useful to the topic, then don't say
anything at all.

1) Trusted directories

2) Article distribution sites, (when you actually have something
of value relating to the members interests to contribute)

3) Press releases sites, (when you have a real press release
that is newsworthy)

4) Newsletter and ezines that match the topic of your page,
provide articles and stories and buy ads as appropriate and
as the budget allows

5) Authority sites that match the topic, (or theme), of your
site

6) Forums related to your theme

7) Blogs comments

8) Social networking sites

NOTE: Here is the million dollar secret that is forgotten or
overlooked by so many marketers. These links are GOLD!

Submit to as many award sites as possible!

This only works well after we are sure the site is designed
properly, has proper contact information, navigates well and
loads fast.

Finally, ALWAYS be on the lookout for more links from relevant,
trusted sites. Link building never stops. Be smart, be creative
and be effective.

After these things are done, now it is time to make sure you
have good stats available to you. You are now getting traffic
and should be able to track a visitor through the site to see
where we can improve conversions.

The stats will also tell us where our traffic is coming from
and looking for. This helps us to identify where we need to
strengthen our keyword/phrase targets.

The stats will tell us what terms are working and which aren't
and which terms we still need to secure.

Most importantly, the stats tell where we need to alter our
message. They tell us where we are losing our prospects and
allows us to alter the message and watch the stats until we see
them going up.

THAT is what we want with every project. We want conversions to
go up, ALWAYS. That is the point and the ONLY real reason to do
all of this work.

NOW it is time to start developing and EXECUTING strategies for
marketing, building a brand and dominating an online target
market segment.

Stop using the large directories that no one reads and
instead start scouring the far reaches of the Internet to
build a quality list of ezines, newsletters and related web
sites. This list is pure gold for your article submissions.

There are many opportunities for you to increase your sales,
sign-ups, lists, etc by using the power of leveraging. You
won't even need to drive any additional traffic to your
site... if you use Integration Marketing.

Integration Marketing can be described as form of joint
venture or cross-selling. You make an arrangement with one
or more people to work together promoting each other's
products or services to your own customers or prospects.

You could also offer another of your own products or
services.

If someone has signed up for your ezine you could recommend
other ezines they might also be interested in.

If a customer has just bought something from you, you could
offer an upgrade or a complementary product.

"Thank You" pages are a great location for these
recommendations or offers. Visitors to your "Thank You"
pages have already performed an action, so it would make
sense to encourage them to perform another action by placing
relevant information or ads about additional products or
services that they might be interested in.

You can also place offers in your customer follow-up email
messages and autoresponder messages.

The key here though is to focus your efforts on meeting your

of your online advertisement. This is the only way to
determine which method works best for you and where
you should spend your hard earned dollars.

two ways of tracking your advertising; sign up for a service
or purchase ad tracking software to install on your

your tracking links and report your results in real-time.
Other examples of service based ad tracking are Hypertracker

You can also purchase software such as AdTrackZ

Software like AdTrackZ must be installed and managed

Which ever method you choose, start now and stop
