Internet Tip Of The Week ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Homepage Hijacking
There's nothing more frustrating than losing the homepage
you really like every time you open your Web browser. It's happened to me before too, so I know exactly how you feel. Well, I'm here today to (hopefully) make you feel a little bit better about all of this.Most of the time, a quick trip to the Tools menu, Internet Options choice will let you reset the page. To do that, just type in the URL of the Web site you want to use for your homepage and then hit the OK button to save it in place. However, sometimes it's an even bigger problem. Some folks
find that each time they reboot their computer, their homepage switches back to an unwanted site and no amount of screaming seems to help. So, what's going on? How did their Web browser get hijacked? Well, there are several ways this can happen; both for a
simple homepage change and the nastier, seemingly permanent change. First, some Web pages will ask you if you want to make them your homepage. If you hit Yes, it's a done deal. After all, you can't be too surprised that your homepage was changed after you told your browser it was okay. However, some will modify this question to something like,
"Do you like freebies?" When you hit Yes to this, it secretly changes the homepage on you. Most of the time, the same dialogue box that's asking you if you like freebies (or whatever) will also say something to the effect that it's going to reset your homepage. They try to distract you from that message though, just to get you to click "Yes." So, be careful with those types. Fortunately, when your homepage is switched in the ways
outlined above, going to Tools, Internet Options will let you set your page back to whatever you want (of course, you'll need to know the address of your homepage). Normally, that takes care of the problem and you're back to normal again. Another way your homepage can get switched is through a
security hole in Internet Explorer. But, as long as you keep your browser up to date, this shouldn't be a problem. If it does get switched through this security hole, it's my understanding that generally, a script is placed in the Startup menu (Start, All Programs, Startup) that will reset the homepage each time Windows loads. Deleting it should let you switch back to your homepage permanently as well. Oh, and make sure you update Internet Explorer if you aren't in the habit of doing it. That's one nasty little security hole! Finally, software can even be a problem. Some programs will
load automatically when you start Windows and the first thing they do is reset your homepage. You may be able to disable this through their Options area, but don't hold your breath on that. Your best bet is to disable or get rid of any program you catch doing this. Okay, that's all good and well, but if it is a program
that's switching your homepage, how do you figure out which one it is? Well, if your browser's homepage was reset to the homepage of a particular software company (whose software you just installed), you probably aren't going to need too much mental energy to figure out who did it. On the other hand, if you have no clue where the homepage
in question came from, you'll need to look back on recently installed programs. Did your homepage change right after you installed a particular program? If so, that's where you should start looking. It seems that most of the time, these types of programs run from the Startup folder (mentioned above). So, if you see something in there that shouldn't be (or you're not sure), you may want to remove the item, reset your homepage back to one you actually want and then see if it stays put. Oh, one last thing: watch out for install programs too.
Some of them have an option for resetting your homepage that's checked or selected by default (you know, for your "convenience"). Internet marketing has become so successful that many web
marketers neglect other marketing opportunities. Offline channels can boost your online traffic and business. Used effectively, traditional advertising vehicles remind customers to visit your site. Even better, promoting your website offline can drive new clientele to your web business. Below are ideas every marketer should consider: URL Return Address Include your domain address on the
bottom line of your return address on all company mailings. URL on Packaging Retails should include their URL on
packaging. Existing customers who purchase through retail may not realize that your business has an online presence. If you ship products, invest in labeling that will include the company URL. Business Cards Insert a business card that details the web
address in all product shipments. A coupon or discount code toward web-based purchases further increases the likelihood customers will visit the site. Nothing drives customers online better than discount! Presentations/Handouts Include the web address on each page
of a presentation or conference handout. As the presentation is passed on, the company brand and web address will be reinforced. Promotional Materials Promotional materials and giveaways
are still an effective method of advertising. Promotional items have a long shelf life and may bring in traffic over time. In addition to your logo and company name, and be sure to brand your promotional item with your web address. Vehicles Display the address of your web site prominently
on all company vehicles. The text should be readable from a distance, so be sure to use a font that is easy to read and well-proportioned. Help Wanted Include your URL in any employment ads.
Uniforms Include the company's web address on any branded
clothing or uniforms worn by staff or employees. This reinforces your online presence. Internet marketing is becoming more competitive. It is not

Success Doesn't Happen Overnight So Don't Quit!
You know what is the worst thing that can happen when working on the Net? That people quit before they even really get started! That people don't give themselves a fair chance to realize their own potential! Maybe it's because people expect way too much from the Internet way too early. How many 'overnight' successes can you count? Probably none...and that's because most of those 'overnight' success stories took time to happen. A good question to ask is: why are we all in such a hurry that any sense of patience seems ridiculous? I think I can answer that one. We've been programmed to believe that everything should happen instantaneously. We ignore the fact that Rome wasn't built in a day. We refuse to buy-in to the truth that most successes are built on blood, sweat and some occasional tears. We want it all RIGHT NOW and somehow think we are entitled to it. Let me gives you some names to consider: Ford, Rockefeller, Kennedy, Trump. Do you think they started off with everything? Do you truly believe that somebody didn't have to pay some dues before they got to where they were? Do you really think they didn't have some dark days, bitter disappointments, etc., before the sun came shining through? Somebody had to start somewhere and BUILD UP! Well, my friends, somebody did decide to build up. They didn't cave in because of a minor set-back. They forged ahead - just as anyone on the path to success does. They took the lemons and turned them into lemonade! If you came to the Internet expecting instant riches you did yourself a grave disservice. Just like anything else worth working for, you have to give it the time and the effort and the patience to make it your own. On the Internet, it's business as usual - just as it is in the brick and mortar world. You have to be willing to put in the labor that produces success. Sometimes, you also have to spend a few dollars. But mostly, you have to believe in what you do and believe it'll pay you back. The second worst mistake you can ever make is coming aboard the Internet believing you can coast because there are so many millions of others wanting and needing what you offer. The competition is thick and it is solid and is more than willing to show people how wrong you are and how better they are. The Internet has made A LOT of money for A LOT of people and you CAN be one of them. But for the vast majority of people it is a work-in-progress. Don't be fooled or disappointed if it doesn't happen overnight. Very few things in life that happen overnight LAST! Hang in there, go with the ebbs & flows and make your success something that not only happens but continues on into the millennium! It happens. ===================================== Clue # 402 -

Web Hosting can be difficult to understand, but it is
actually the space that you buy on the Internet to host your site. Sometimes this web hosting service includes the domain name and sometimes it doesn't. Choosing your web hosting service is the next step you take after having chosen your domain name. Most website owners choose a hosting company to host the web page because of several factors including equipment, space on server, etc. Types of Web Hosting Companies
Generally speaking there are two types of web hosting
companies. One is called web hosting on a shared server and the other is hosting on a dedicated server. The difference is the amount of space you will receive for your web site. Web Hosting with A Dedicated Server
When you decide to host your web site on a dedicated server
you get a really large amount of space in which you can store all your web site data, files, images, and information. Using a dedicated server is also a lot more secure than if you use a shared server because you are not sharing the server with any other websites, unfortunately it is expensive and not recommended if you are just starting and uploading your website for the first time. Web Hosting with a Shared Server
This is the way most new sites choose to host their
websites in the beginning. It is really economical and it is given to you at this price precisely because you share the server and the IP address with others. Unfortunately there are a few problems that come up when using this type of web hosting. As an example, the web hosting service may go down once in a while and cause your website to go off line. If any of the other users of that server does anything illegal or unethical then the other websites on that server are also thoroughly scrutinized. When a website gets too big then the server has a problem loading it or the web hosting company may contact you asking you to reduce your website size. This is why large companies and large websites prefer to use a Web hosting dedicated server. What to Look for in a web Hosting Company?
This is not the area you want to cut costs. A bad web
hosting company will cause you some serious nightmares and you will end up spending more time and more money fixing the problems they create. Make sure you choose a reliable web hosting company. This company should guarantee that you have either a minimal or no downtime at all. Downtime means you are not online and your potential customer cannot find you. If you already have customers and you experience a lot of down time, these customers will stop coming to your site and consider you to be unreliable. A Web Hosting Company that Offers Back Ups The hosting company you choose should be backing up all the
files regularly so that if you should ever lose any information or in the event of a server failure, your work is saved and can easily be restored. The Number of Email Addresses
Another important factor when choosing a web hosting

the battery life of your wireless mouse as well. There is one practice that may not be too practical for everyone, but if you're able, you can always try it. I'm talking about using your mouse as little as possible. If you know several keyboard shortcuts, you should use them! (Or at least use as many as you can). The less you click your mouse, the more battery life you will save. I know keyboard shortcuts are hard to learn and it's even

I was married to my second husband for eighteen years. Now,
I'm a widower, but don't consider this any of kind of downer, especially considering statistics suggest many newly-married folks don't even get eighteen months of togetherness! During the first few years after 'being alone' my parents
decided to spend the months of November through January with me. At the time, they lived in California; I in Georgia. I was fine, but have you ever tried to tell that to yourparents, no matter how old you happen to be? But here's the beautiful thing that came of it. It was
then I realized just how much my father loved Christmas. During their extended visit, I guess I didn't do enough
decorating around the house to satisfy them. In earlier years when we first moved here my husband and I did do the big decorating thing. After a few years we stopped. It didn't bother me in the
least. So long as I had some pretty poinsetta and other niceholiday trinkets that was fine. My daughters were grown and lived out of state. The only time I made a big dealwas when and if they were able to visit. Well, that may have been fine enough for me, but my folks are die-hard traditionalists. When they didn't see the Christmas ornaments going up all over, it bothered them. I tried to assure them it really was okay; I just didn't go
in for all that sort of thing anymore. Either they didn't believe me, or they didn't care. In
all likelihood, they didn't care. Struggle as it might havebeen with a large family, they made our childhood Christmases special - always. And they weren't stopping now. My mom is gonna have her Christmas one way or the other,
and that means major decorating. When I saw her "at it" I chuckled to myself and said,Well, that's Mom." But, it was my father who really surprised me.
There wasn't a trip to any store that he wasn't coming back
from with yet another poinsetta or two, or a lovely decoration for the doors or the house. He'd always been famous for picking the most beautiful birthday or holiday cards, butthe wreaths he chose were stunning. I never realized how fussy my dad was! If he didn't think
the wreath had just the right "look", back out he went to exchange t. I have to admit, I both amazed and impressed with this attention to detail. Finally, my dad got around to asking me about a Christmas
tree to which I nonchalantly replied, "Oh, don't worry about that. It's too much". Besides, they'd already turned my home into a mini-showplace. He turned to me and asked, "Notree? Not even for Daddy?"
Daddy??? I'm well over 50 years old! Hadn't I out-grown
that 'daddy's girl' syndrome? Didn't he see that? What was hetalking about? At that moment it dawned on me, crystal clear, how much he
truly loved Christmas. How was I supposed to resist that question?I tried to play it off with "Oh, come on, Dad." Ten minutes later I was in my car. Had to buy a tree.
Isn't it funny? My dad was a policeman. There were six of
us to make a Happy Christmas for. It could not have been easy; in fact, it wasn't. It's tough satisfying that many kids on Christmas morning and even now I wonder how they did it. You hear so many comments about policemen. Fortunately, my
dad was popular and many merchants were generous. Morethan generous! Some gave him sleds, toy soldiers, dolls. I even remember a couple of bikes they 'donated'. That's how much they thought of him! So, somehow, my folks always managed to pull off Christmas. And now, here he was. Still thinking Christmas was
something pretty special. I love Christmas, too, but I don't think Iever truly saw it through his eyes before. Between the poinsettias,
wreaths, decorations and the tree I realized for the first time in my life how much the traditions and the good-will of Christmas meant to my father, and why he made such a big deal of teaching us to be so compassionate and decent to others. It was and will always remain a tender moment of
revelation. My dad was my hero and I'm will be forever thankful to be
given the opportunity to see for myself something I'll never forget. That I'm the daughter of a man who saw Christmas for exactlywhat's it is supposed to be about - loving the ones most important toyou and showing it with my mom supporting it. ---------------

Some Tips on Using Forum Posting
What are Forums? Forums are discussions boards where people congregate on the internet to chat with, share ideas, etc., with people who have similar interests. Forums can be found on just about any subject imaginable, and some you would not! If you wish to find people interested in a particular subject fourms are an ideal way of finding them. If you have a business in a particular field, joining forums related to that is a good way to get your word out to a targetted market. Finding Forums: Finding forums is usually as easy as doing a search on the
main search engines. This will bring up way more than you will need, but to make your time worthwhile, search out the most popular forums for the subject you are interested in. Those with the largest, regular user, memberships, will give your postings the most exposure. Using a Forum: There are guidelines to be followed to stay in the good
graces of the moderators and other users of most forums. It is strongly advised that you read through the rules and guidelines provided for any forum before you join. Find out what their rules are regarding advertising, signature files, etc. to make sure it is worth your while joining. Once you have found a forum (or forums) which you feel suit your purpose, you will have to register. This is usually easy to do and takes a couple of minutes. Simply joining a forum and then placing blatant adverts will get you barred swiftly from the majority of forums. However, if you follow a few simple steps you can enjoy the company on the forum and at the same time do a little subtle advertising, which can be very effective. Your first post should introduce yourself. You are joining a community after all, be polite. Stay on subject in your postings, do not start posting about something completely different. Follow the flow of posts. Either ask intellegent questions about the subject being discussed, offer a valid comment or even answer a question if you can. In other words, begin to fit in with the community and build a presence within the group. Once others see that you respect their group, and want to fit in with its values, etc., you will be accepted and they will want to know more about you. This is when your membership of forums really begins to pay dividends. Never blatently advertise. Many forums allow what is called a signature file which is usually one or two lines which appear at the bottom of any posting you make. Again check what exactly each forum does or does not allow. Make your signature file interesting, but short. Use a catchy message, usually with only one, or at most two links. If allowed use colours and/ or bold lettering to attract attention. Changing the signature file regularly also attracts attention. By taking it slowly, and becoming a respected member of the forum, you will find that other forum members will begin to pay attention to your postings, and your signature file. Your postings will build your reputation as knowledgeable on the subject, and they will want to see what you are doing and offering through your links. Although it may take a little time to establish yourself in a forum, by posting regularly you can fairly quickly become known and accepted and see the results of your efforts. =====================================

Podcasting content comes in a wide variety of shapes and
sizes. Businesses are finding many different and creative ways of incorporating podcasts into their business strategies and marketing plans. Here are just some of the various types of content that
businesses are turning into podcasts... 1. Audio Books
Books that are "read" aloud are no longer embraced only by
the visually impaired. For example, commuters who want to make the most of their travel time have long embraced books-on-tape. The podcast medium is far more compact and portable, so audio books and similar content are now being made available as podcasts. 2. Audio Tours
Interested in a guided tour of a historic site, or a
detailed explanation of a museum display? Audio tour podcasts with detailed explanations are becoming quite common. 3. Sermons
The word of God, Allah, or a bible study discussion are now
all popular content for podcast material. It does not really matter the what the religious material might be -- what is important is that by turning those conversations and dialogs into podcasts, their reach is being extended and new audiences are being touched . 4. Indie Artists Demos
Independent musical artists, looking to build a community
and develop a fan base, are no longer restricted by their geographical region. With podcasts, Indie artists can expand their audience and increase their reach. Indie's can use iTunes to get reactions to new material or songs. What better way to learn a language than to hear it?
Podcasts are a perfect medium for foreign language instruction. Listeners can hear accents and phrasing, and listen to a specific lecture until they have fully mastered the content. 6. Recipes Interested in gourmet cooking, but do not have the time to watch cooking show hosts such as Rachel Ray or Martha Stewart? Download the podcasts to learn new recipes, at a time and place of your choosing and convenience. 7. Showing Homes For Realtors
What better way to market property or homes for sale than
with a video podcast? Home tours help sell available listings, and with economic conditions currently unfavorable to sellers, they need all the help they can get. Video podcasts or slideshows of the homes help entice interested buyers to learn more about properties. Using podcasting as a communication medium will help expand the homes appeal. 8. Sporting Event Commentaries
Sportscasters are always ready and willing to offer
opinions and commentary on sporting events. Pre-event festivities and post-event analysis are often enjoyed by fans, and if the commentaries are made available at any time as podcasts, the listeners have much more flexibility. 9. Medical Instruction
As just one example, medical schools have recorded a
variety of heart murmurs as podcasts. Medical students studying cardiology can listen to the various heart defects until they understand the different sounds and the impact those anomalies have on the circulatory system. Recognizing the sound patterns of a heart murmur can greatly aid medical students when they run across similar anomalies in a real patient. 10. Class Lectures
Universities have embraced podcasting, providing
supplemental class material as podcasts. Students often listen to the material while commuting from one class to another, exercising, or relaxing between classes. 11. Corporate - Internal Sales Force Updates
Podcasting is a perfect way for a business to communicate
with remote sales staff, regarding things such as addressing corporate policy changes, new product descriptions, and marketing points. Educating a wide-spread sales force about a new product or service has always been a challenge. Corporations have tackled this problem by providing audio and video podcasts that detail a product's use. Sales team members are often able to learn about new products without needing to travel to the corporate headquarters for formal instruction or sales seminars. 12. Political Debates
Are political debates a hobby, or do you just like to stay
informed on the issues and candidates? Many political debates are now available via podcasts. Potential podcasting content covers the gamut. With more
