With images now playing such a large role on search engine
results pages, optimizing them has to be one of your top
priorities.


Give your image files names that describe what they are. If
the name is more than one word use a dash instead of an
underscore to separate each word . Images should preferably
be in jpg format.


Use relevant and descriptive keywords in your Alt text. This
is not only good for the search engines but also for
instances where the image is not displayed, so that your
visitors will know what it's about.


Put captions or label text as near to the image as possible.


All anchor text leading to pages with your images should be
composed of appropriate keyword phrases.


Submit your images to photo sharing sites like Flickr and
make use of the features offered eg, tagging, geo-tagging,

Attention grabbing web design will kill your sale!

In the of-line marketing world it is all about trying to
get the attention of the potential consumer to a commercial
message. The primary goal is to get noticed by the public.

It doesn't matter if it is for radio, TV, magazines,
newspapers or posters. It all comes down to getting noticed.

On the Web this doesn't work! The reason for this is that
on the web, the net surfer is actively searching and
looking for information from this gigantic data repository
and database that we call the Internet.

They are scanning and reading text on web sites and they
are mostly blind to graphics and pictures.

 

In the of-line world the potential target is mostly passive
and experience ads in a state of relaxation among other
stimulations. Here you must scream out your message to
market your product or service.

Of-line people are passive! On the Web people are active!

 

What does this mean for your web site?

For one thing, when anyone visits your web site, you at
that moment already have their full attention. So, there is
no need to get visual attention to attract your visitors.
They are on your site, already!

But, you normally have their full attention only until they
have decided if your site is what they are looking for or
not. If your site is not what they are looking for or they
don't understand that your site is what they are looking
for they quickly leave your site, never to return.

The time between they arrive at your site and decide to
stay or leave is very short. Normally around 10 seconds!

If you use flash or large graphics, which take to long to
load, most people leave without figuring out what your site
is about. The attention span on the Net is short!

The web surfers don't look at graphic so much as they are
reading the information you present.

When they arrive you need to keep their attention and
inform them about what your site is all about and describe
its benefits.

You need to keep their attention, but not by an attention
grabbing web design! Instead, use attention grabbing text!
The most important attention grabbing text is the headline!
The headline will break it or make it!

Does this mean that the web design can look sloppy or
amateurish? No! It just means that the design of a site
should not be made with extensive graphics or flash
presentation. This will just confuse and take to long time
to download. If you make a clean and easy navigational web
site you are much better off!

Yet, what one see on the Internet is to often sites with
advanced web design that to often leave you asking what its
all about and what its creators are thinking!

If website owners and webmasters concentrated much more of
their effort on text information and less on design they
would see much better response from their potential
customers.

There is no need to hire a web designer and pay them
several 1000 of dollars to make a site attractive and to
make it commercially viable. In most cases this is
contra-productive.

The web designer often will kill your sale by creating
attention grabbing web design. Instead, put your effort on
the text information on your site!

as analog to digital television (DTV) on February 17, 2009.
DTV is an innovative new type of broadcasting technology
that delivers movie-quality pictures and sound, more
channels, and even high definition television (HDTV) to
consumers with HD television sets.

While the benefits of DTV are remarkable, millions of
households risk losing television reception unless they
take the easy steps to receive a digital signal. Congress
created the TV Converter Box Coupon Program for households
wishing to keep using their analog TV sets after February
17, 2009. The Program allows U.S. households to obtain up
to two coupons, each worth $40, that can be applied toward
the cost of eligible converter boxes.

Avoid Duplicate Content Penalties in the Search Engines By
Sharon Housley

Large search engines attempt to filter their search results
by removing any results that duplicate the content of other
search results. Such filtering is referred to as "duplicate
content penalty".

It is important to understand and identify what "duplicate
content" actually is. Duplicate content is generally
defined as substantive blocks of text that are copied from
one site to another. Some webmasters try to use duplicated
content in an attempt to manipulate and influence search
engine rankings. The search community still occasionally
debates the legitimacy and existence of duplicate content
filters, but whether they exist today, or will exist
tomorrow, is really irrelevant. Most webmasters have simply
accepted the fact that the duplicate content penalty is
currently enforced by at least some of the major search
engines.

With that in mind, how does the search engine determine
which version of the content is the original, and which is
duplicated? It is difficult for the search engine to tell
which website is responsible for the original version of
any content, and some innocent websites might find
themselves penalized or banned for including duplicated
content. After analyzing the behavior of search engines, it
is safe to assume that the search engines will often retain
the content listing from what it considers to be the most
'trusted' source. They may look at the number of incoming
related links, the age of the domain, or any other SEO
factors that reinforce the reputation of the domain that
contains the duplicated content. If one of the 'copies' is
considered by the search engine to be from a reputable
source, they my find themselves ranking well, while the
actual source of the 'original' version may find themselves
unjustly banned or penalized.

Representatives from the major search engines have all made
it clear that they prefer search engines that contain
unique content. Webmasters who want to avoid any current or
future bans will do well to follow these simple guidelines
in order to avoid duplicate content penalties:

1. Redirects

If you redesign your website, use permanent 301 redirects.
Redirects are a legitimate way of routing web traffic.

2. Unique

Each page within a website should be unique. The focus of
each page on a website, even if it's similar to the theme
of another page, must contain unique and original content.

3. Multi-Language

If there are multiple language versions of a website,
consider using a different domain for different versions;
search engines do not view an article translated into a
variety of foreign languages as being duplicated content --
each language version is unique content in the eyes of the
search engine.

4. Unique Meta Tags

Each web page should contain unique meta tags.

5. Robots.txt

If you do have intentional duplicate content on your
website, be sure to have a "robots.txt" file for your site
to prevent the search engines from indexing the areas with
duplicated content (or any areas of the website that you
wish to remain private, for that matter).

6. Affiliate Twist

If you are promoting products or services using an
affiliate program, use unique and distinctive product
descriptions and web copy. If you simply use the same
descriptions provided by the product owner or service
provider, it's very likely that your copy could be viewed
as duplicated content.

7. Copyright

Include a copyright notice on your website.

8. Enforce

If you discover that another website is scraping your
unique web content and replicating it, enforce your
copyright! Use CopyScape at http://www.copyscape.com/ , or
use their "copy sentry" service to receive notification of
any infractions. If you discover a copyright violation,
contact the website and politely request appropriate
changes.

If the changes are not made in a reasonable and
satisfactory amount of time, contact the ISP (web host) of
the infringing site, and file a DMCA complaint with Google
http://www.google.com/dmca.html .

9. Avoid Identical Content

Do everything you can to avoid serving a web page that
contains content identical or closely related to another
page. If for some reason you have two pages that contain
identical content, use a robots.txt to block the search
engines from spidering one version of the page.

While it may still be debatable whether all the major
search engines currently employ a duplicate content
penalty, all have made it abundantly clear that they do not
have any desire to provide search results that rehash the
same content over and over. Actively avoid any potential
penalties by taking a proactive approach to building unique
content.

Search engines read and index PDF files just like web pages,
so whether you create E-books, case studies, whitepapers...
if they are in the form of a PDF file, they have to be
optimized.


How you create your PDF files is important, for SEO
purposes. You must use a text-base program eg Microsoft
Word, so the content is searchable. Make sure your content
is optimized with relevant keywords, headlines, etc.


Document properties are very important - the most important
is the Title. This is what shows up in the results page of
a search engine.


Specify the Content Reading Order - the order in which
search engines extract text from your document for indexing.
You want your most valuable content to appear first!


Include links in your PDF files so readers can click to your
site for more information, and use keyword-rich anchor text
to link to your PDFs.

Save your PDF files at a version that is lower than the
latest version as not everyone will have the latest version.


Place your PDFs as close to the root directory as possible -
don't bury them deep within your site because that will make
them less likely to be indexed.

Top Ten Reasons to Live a Life of Integrity

You might think that it's a no-brainer why  one should live
an honest life. But it's apparent to me that a life of
integrity is the exception rather than the rule. How many
people do you know who are honest all the time?

 

We could make a case about the morality and the "rightness"
of living honestly. Religious leaders have been advocating
this for thousands of years. It's doubtful that even they
could provide a true model of integrity.

I believe in the moral and ethical value of integrity but I
also think there are very practical and worthwhile reasons
for living an impeccable life. Here are ten:

1. Trust. In order to be successful in business or hold a
responsible job, a person must have a reputation of
honesty. Resources are not entrusted to people who have
proven themselves as untrustworthy.

2. Good Health. I have no research to support this, but I'd
be willing to bet that people who tell the truth are
healthier. They have less concern, less stress and feel
better about themselves. This has to translate into better
health.

3. Pride. I've yet to meet a liar who has any real pride in
themselves. Any good leadership training will stress the
importance and value of having pride in what you do and who
you are. If your reputation is grounded in deception, your
opinion of yourself is poor indeed. Being honest just plain
feels good.

4. Peace of Mind. If you cheat on your income taxes, you
may get away with it, but you'll probably always worry that
you'll get audited and face fines, extra charges and even
jail as a result. Your reputation would also be tarnished.
When you deal honestly, you have peace of mind. It's
impossible to worry and be happy at the same time.

5. Remembering. It's been said that no one has a good
enough memory to be a good liar. When you don't tell the
truth, you have to INVENT it. When you do, you'll often be
asked to recall your rendition of the truth, and you may
not be able to do so because you forgot what you said. You
KNOW the truth, but you can't remember your version of it.
Very embarrassing. Besides, it's hard work to continually
come up with false stories.

6. Good Sleep. If you lie--unless you have no conscience at
all--you'll often lose sleep because of your fears of being
found out. Your worry and your guilt will keep you awake. A
good night's sleep is one of life's many pleasures and
honest people sleep better.

7. Confidence. Many people have excellent "bull" detectors.
They know--at least at some level--when you're being fake.
If telling lies is your modus operandi, you know that these
people will often see though your façade. There's no way to
have real confidence in oneself when you're walking on
"bull."

8. Good Relationships. Relationships are the jewels of our
lives. Some would argue that relationships ARE our lives.
And breeches in trust are the death knell of relationships.
When trust is gone, there is no foundation upon which to
build. Relationships lacking in trust seem hollow and
shallow. They lack joy.

9. Legal Problems. We don't have to look very far to see
the legal trouble people get themselves into from
dishonesty. Lying in a court of law or to an officer of the
law is literally AGAINST the law. Conversely, if you have
no secrets, you can rest easy and its hard for anyone to
blackmail you.

10. It Doesn't Work. All too often our deceptions and
duplicity are discovered. In the information age in which
we live, it's even more likely that lies will sooner or
later be seen for what they are. Dishonesty is just plain
inefficient.

The right thing to do is seldom the easy thing to do. But
it's worth it.

DVD-R versus DVD+R

IF you want to add a recordable DVD drive to yourcomputer,
you should know the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?

As DVD recording comes of age and the prices come down,
more of us will likely be adding DVD writers to our
computers. But what gives with these different formats?

Anyone who was around twenty years, or so ago might
remember the battle between the two video tape formats: VHS
(Victor Home System) and Betamax (Sony). Fast forward to
the twenty-first century and we have a similar battle of
the formats with DVD.

The disks are pretty much the same, but the writing process
is different. DVD+R is a bit more advanced, but the disks
often cost more than the older DVD-R format.

Another thing to consider is what format your DVD recording
software works best in. My suggestion? Pay the extra bucks
for a writer that supports both formats or wait until the
dust settles.

Cheap, Easy First Info Product

If you're looking to create your first information product
but are having a hard time coming up with ideas, then I
will suggest you do an interview. Of course, you're
probably saying - but I don't know anyone to interview! The
best bit is: you don't need to, just go to RTIR.com to find
people in your area of expertise who are looking to gain
exposure.

RTIR.com has a large list of authors, business owners,
activists and more wanting to gain exposure for their
product or services. You get to pick their brain for 1/2 an
hour or more. You then edit the content and sell it or give
it away. They get to plug their product or service during
the interview. They end up being exposed to your customers
and you get free content. It's a win-win situation.

The site covers a broad spectrum of topics including (but
not limited to):

Business

Consumer Advice

Crime, Law

Education

Family Issues

Health, Fitness

History

How-To

Music

New Age

Personal Finances

Pets

Politics

To complete your first information product go to RTIR.co
and click on the icon "Find A Guest". On the next screen
choose a relevant subject area and you'll retrieve a
listing of all the people wishing to do interviews.
Remember - these people are seeking interviews! Clicking on
a link "more" under a heading will give you an email
address and usually a contact number. Call or email each of
the people you wish to interview. If you get even one
response, you'll have started the process of developing
your first information product.

Once you have someone to do the interview with, generate a
list of questions relevant to the expertise of the guest.
Send them a copy of the best questions before hand. Set up
a time and date to do the interview and make sure you're on
time! When the time comes, record the call using Skype and
PowerGramo Recorder. Ask your questions quickly and try not
to surprise your guest with any unexpected questions. Once
completed you can begin editing the program using Audacity,
create a CD with MagicISO, Nero or Daemon Tools or just
leave it as an mp3. If you have a CD upload it to Kunaki
and you can start selling it from there immediately.
Promote it on your blog or eBay and wait for your first
sale. It's that easy!

It won't be perfect, but by having an expert in your field
answering questions, you will ensure your product is chock
full of great, useful information. Plus, it doesn't have to
cost you a penny.
