Problem Solving

Have you ever run into a problem with your computer that
brought up an error message? You're really lucky if you've
never had to deal with that. Well, when it happens,
wouldn't it be nice if you could just capture that error
message and send it to someone else so they could help you
figure out what's wrong?  Well, there's a way.

Find the Print Screen and Alt buttons on your keyboard and
you'll be all set. The PrtScr button is located on the
right hand side of your keyboard right next to the Scroll
Lock key. (It's also right beside the F12 key on most
keyboards). If you hit the Alt and PrtScr keys at the same
time, your computer will take a "snapshot" of the active
window (which would be the error message). Now, if you want
to get a shot of the whole screen, push the Shift key along
with the PrtScr key and you'll have it.

Once you have that image captured, you can go and paste it
in another program and then send it to your "computer
expert" for advice. You can put it in MS Word, Notepad,
Wordpad or even an e-mail. It's up to you. Once you have
the program you want to put it in open, paste the
screenshot. Along with the image, you can type out a
description of what you were doing when the problem
occurred. That will especially help if you're sending it to
someone else to look at. With both the screenshot and the
description, they should be able to lead you in the right
direction to get things fixed. Having all of that
information documented helps if you have to call on some
professional tech support.

Are DVD Information Products Profitable?

It's common knowledge that information products have high
margins. Information in all forms (books, ebooks, CDs,
DVDs, online videos, etc) commonly sells for multiples of
10, 50, 100 times the unit cost of manufacturing the
product. It's no wonder there are so many information
marketers. Those healthy margins tend to attract a crowd.

There are many mediums from which to choose for information
products but DVDs might be the best way to go. Don't listen
to the misguided fools who'll try to tell how difficult is
to make a DVD, how you'll have to buy expensive software,
and how you'll have to deal if inventory & shipping
nightmares because none of that is true. The reality is
those people are too lazy to look around and see how simple
it is to create a DVD information product.

The fact is that DVDs are very simple to make and don't
require investing in expensive software. In fact, I create
DVDs without spending a nickel. Yes it does require a few
software programs but the ones I use are freely available
on the Internet and they work incredibly well. In fact, the
software I use to convert avi files to DVD files comes with
an incredible support forum that answered my questions
within 24 hours. That's better service than a lot of
products I've actually paid for.

Shipping & manufacturing are easily outsourced saving you
much hassle. Kunaki offers a great service that will create
and ship your DVDs as they receive orders. At $1.75 per DVD
(including cover) plus a nominal $3 handling fee on each
order, Kunaki's rates a very competitive. Kunaki also ships
internationally to almost every country as well as to any
US address. Expedited shipping is available for customers
who want to get their product overnight. Simply use
Kunaki's proprietary software to upload your product to
their facility and you're ready to go. It's very quick and
easy.

There are lots of great reason for information businesses
to love DVDs. Consider the higher perceived value of DVDs
when pitted against books or ebooks. How much does a book
cost? For $20 or less anybody can go to their local
bookstore and pickup a book on just about any topic
imaginable. You're nuts if you think your book will sell
for much more than that. It's not unusual for DVD
information products to sell for more than $100...and
Kunaki only charges about $2 to manufacture your DVD. The
profit margins on information products can be gargantuan.
And since Kunaki allows you to self-publish your DVD, you
keep 100% of the profits for yourself.

The service I use also provides the option of putting a UPC
code on the product. This may not seem like such a big deal
but this makes it incredibly easy to sell your DVD on
Amazon. Talk about instant credibility. While most
information marketers are schlepping their DVDs on homemade
websites, yours is available on Amazon so it must be better.

There's no requirement that your DVD be a video product
either. Data DVDs containing software programs as well as
many other types of data and information are both popular
and profitable. And we haven't even gotten started yet. One
article can do justice to all the fabulous reasons for
creating your own DVD info product.

Many marketers use plain text for creating their newsletters
and email promotions. But different email programs will
display these mailings... differently.


Email programs will break a line of text
after a specific number of characters. This could ma
ke your
text appe
ar something a little like this paragraph!


So a good rule of thumb is to keep your lines at 60 or 65
characters (including spaces). Do this by pressing the Enter
key after the 60th (or 65th) character. This is called
inserting a hard return.


Bear in mind that you can't 'justify' (align) plain text.
You can use the space bar to indent paragraphs or headings
- up to about five spaces is 'safe', any more spaces might
make your text split into two lines. Do not use the Tab key.


Furthermore, you cannot format plain text ie no bold,
italics or underlining. But... when you want to emphasize
certain words, you will need to use CAPITAL LETTERS or
*asterisks* or you can get creative and find >>> other <<<
ways to call attention to specific words.


Symbols and special characters may not show up as you intend
them to, so always check before you send a mailing to your
readers. Try to use only standard ASCII characters as these
will display correctly in all email programs.


You should always send a copy of your mailing to yourself
first, and (if possible) view it in different email
programs. This won't guarantee that your readers will all
receive a perfect version of your mailing, but it will give
you a better chance of seeing what most of your readers will
see.

Web Log Analysis

Everyone who understands Internet Marketing will tell you
to analyze your web logs... but what does that really mean?
What particular things should you pay attention to when
analyzing your web logs?

Errors - Page Not Found

How many visitors to your site experience an incorrect or
invalid URL? Perhaps you have links on your website to a
page that no longer exists. Reviewing the number of "page
not found" listings in your web logs will help discern if
you have any pages that are not accessible to your
visitors. If that is the case, you can then either replace
the missing page, or implement a system to automatically
redirect the visitor to an appropriate alternate page.

Top Referrers

Where is your traffic coming from? Reviewing the sources of
web traffic allows you to assess what advertising campaigns
have resulted in increased web traffic.

Top Exit Pages

Where are you losing your traffic? Are there specific pages
on the website that bleed traffic? This means that, for
whatever reason, website visitors choose to leave your
website after viewing a specific page. Evaluating which
pages lead visitors to leave your site might mean that the
content you are providing is not what the visitor expected.
Perhaps small changes can be made to specific webpages to
capture traffic and retain the website visitor's interest.

Top Incoming Pages

What pages are bringing visitors into your website? Perhaps
you have a webpage buried deep within your site that
unexpectedly generates a significant amount of traffic.
Perhaps you have an obscure page in your site that contains
odd or unusual phrases that perform surprisingly well in
the search engines. Can the results be reproduced by using
a related phrase on a similar webpage?

Top Search Words & Phrases

What keywords and phrases are customers using to find your
website? The keywords that do not appear prevalent in the
web logs can be just as important. Are there specific
phrases you are attempting to optimize for, but are not
generating the desired traffic? Perhaps renewed effort
needs to be applied to website optimization.

Unique Visitors

How many unique visitors does your website receive? Is the
trend increasing or decreasing? The number of unique
visitors (note: not the number of hits) can be a good
indicator of a website's popularity, and any trends that
might relate to that popularity.

Average Time Spent And Page Views

How much time is spent on the website? How much time is
spent on a specific webpage? Webmasters will often attract
traffic by using catchy titles, but then the actual page
content fails to deliver, and the website visitor ends up
simply clicking away. Take a close look at the length of
time your website visitors spend across a website and on
specific pages. Consider what tweaks can be made to better
harness and retain that web traffic.

Browsers

Evaluating the various web browsers being used by your
website visitors can tell you two things - what browsers
you should be testing your website in, AND, what Operating
System your customers have. Are you getting a lot of Mac
traffic but only offer a windows product? Maybe you can
partner with a competing Mac product and capture some of
that market.

Country of Origin

The country of origin might be helpful if you are
considering localization. It can also be helpful if you see
a lot of PPC (Pay Per Click) traffic coming from a country
that does not generate a lot sales. This means you are
paying for traffic which is NOT resulting in sales.

Log analysis is an ongoing process. Pay particular
attention to trends and traffic patterns. Understanding web
logs will give you an insight into what is working and what
is not working. The numbers seldom lie -- statistics
gleaned from web logs can give a true picture of how a
website is performing. By critically analyzing the numbers,
webmasters can effectively optimize their website to better
capture and hold on to web traffic.

While the information contained in web logs is very helpful
in discern what designs are working, and what path users
take in your website, keep in mind that the MOST important
information to evaluate is the traffic that results in
sales. Work with your order processing company to determine
what keywords and advertisements lead to sales. The goal of
any advertising campaign is not to just bring web traffic,
but to bring web traffic that ultimately decides to buy
your product or service.

Foistware

When you buy software, more often than now, it will also come with
demo or trial version of one or more other programs. They are simply
a type of advertisement for these other programs, but they are not
actually purchased by you.

Sometimes, the demos automatically install themselves onto your
computer, followed by the installation of the program that you did
buy (this is called foistware). Another commonality on some software
is a list of the other programs on the installation interface.

These types of demos can often cause confusion if you accidentally
run one of the trial programs and think, "Hey, I paid full price for
this software, what's with the 15 day trial"?

If you happen to run into this probe lm, just start over and make
sure you run the installation of the program you paid for. If you
keep a close eye on what your computer is installing, you will be
able to get the right thing downloaded and the full version of the
program should work just fine.

If you get caught in the demo trap, don't worry. It happens to the
best of us. You can just go back and start again to get where you
really want to be!

The Ability to Respectfully Disagree

A critical key to success in your career and in your life overall is
developing and maintaining good relationships. In fact,
"Relationships" is number five of the Ten Pillars of a World Class
Business.

Our relationships with coworkers, suppliers, spouses, clients,
bosses, siblings, employees, competitors and parents affect
everything we do. Our success is highly dependent upon these
relationships.

And it's not enough to be likable. Being agreeable and good natured
are admirable traits. But in order to effect real change--in order
to be a leader--one must often go against the norm. To make a
difference, we often have to disagree with people and take different
positions. Just going along with everyone will not work.

People are often surprised at how diverse my friends and business
associates are. I have good relationships with people who are
liberal and conservative, religious and secular. I seem to be able
to get along with people from different cultures, with dissimilar
philosophies and even divergent values.

I credit this to usually being tolerant and respectful. I like
people and I learn something from almost everyone. I don't need to
be right--even though I like to be. I also don't believe there is
only one way, one path, one right answer.

The trick is to be able to disagree without being disagreeable. We
want to respect others and have others respect us.

I think it starts with respecting others enough to listen to their
points of view--and to do this regardless of whether or not we agree
with them. The more you understand, the more you validate their
viewpoint, the more likely it is they'll respond in kind, and you'll
have a better relationship.

There's real truth in the old adage, "people don't care how much you
know until they know how much we care." And I love Stephen Covey's
profound maxim, "seek first to understand."

We all know that a response to someone's viewpoint like, "That's
stupid!" is near the worst end of the spectrum. Here are a few on
the other side. Be aware: they require you to be sincere and won't
work unless you are.

"That's an interesting viewpoint. You must have a good reason for
thinking that way. Do you mind telling me what it is?"

"I think I understand what you're saying, and could you tell me more
about how you arrived at your opinion?"

"That's interesting. And I see it somewhat differently. May I
explain?"

"I see what you're saying. I have another way of looking at it . . ."

There are many more. The point is to respond with respect, courtesy
and honesty.

Action Point Commit to improving your ability to talk about
controversial things in a responsible, respectful and tolerant
fashion. You'll get better with practice, but you won't practice and
experiment unless you're committed to doing it well.

Then do it. Respond, don't react. Be considerate without being
abrasive. Speak your truth with compassion.

After discussions, think about how you might have responded
better--how you could have listened better, demonstrated more
respect and been more tolerant. Don't make yourself wrong for it;
just notice what you do, then resolve to do it better next time.

Within the last year Google, Yahoo!, and MSN have all begun
returning "blended" results for some percentage of the
searches that people conduct, where a combination of one or
more specialized search result types, like news, images,
and videos, appear along with traditional web pages on the
search results page.


Before Google launched what it initially called "Universal
Search" in May 2007, this type of specialized content was
only returned as a result of a specifically targeted
"vertical" search.


Blended, or universal, search provides several new
opportunities to get yourself listed in the search engines.


Search engine marketing firm iProspect has just published
the iProspect Blended Search Results Study.


The study was conducted by JupiterResearch and amongst its
key findings, the study shows that:


- 36% of search engines user click "news" results within
blended search results, while only 17% click a "news" result
after conducting a news-specific search


- 31% of search engine users click "image" results within
blended search results, while 26% click an "image" result
after conducting an image-specific search


- 17% of search engine users click "video" results within
blended search results, while only 10% click a "video"
result after conducting a video-specific search


While images are the most clicked type of result after a
vertical-specific search, news items are the most clicked
type of result within blended search results.


Consider the content of your website. What other forms of
searchable content could you provide?


News items?
Images?
Videos?
PDF files?
Music clips?


Then focus on optimizing all your content, not just the text.

Three Killer And Profitable Traffic Sources

It seems these days that everybody is looking for the best
way to drive traffic to their website. From paid sources,
social networks, forums, blogs and other sites there are a
myriad of ways to accomplish this task, but what techniques
really work when it comes to making sales? In this article
I am going to look at some of the better sources of
converting traffic currently available on the net.

Paying For Traffic

Pay Per Click (PPC) is a huge business... In fact some of
the largest players on the net today have gotten into
selling PPC traffic. Unfortunately traffic tends to be an
industry that has a lot of scams and fly by night companies
selling fake clicks and traffic so be on the lookout. To
really excel in the pay per click advertising arena you are
going to need to create large keywords lists related to
your target market and start with a small budget and
cheaper traffic when starting up a new advertising
campaign. You can also shop around to smaller providers if
you are working in highly competitive markets.

Web 2.0 And The Social Scene

Social networks and bookmarking sites are all the rage
these days due to the massive amounts of traffic that can
be achieved especially when directing to content sites like
blogs. Unfortunately most of this traffic can be very short
lived and you absolutely must track the profitability of
this type of traffic from each social bookmarking site used
otherwise you can end up spending a lot of time achieving
lots of traffic that does not convert into sales.

The Power Of Article Marketing

Article marketing is an awesome strategy for pulling in
highly qualified traffic for a couple of reasons. First you
are delivering an article right to your target market that
shares an interest or passion in the topic of the article.
Secondly the resource box or about the author byline
generally will allow you to link back to your sites and
this helps with initial direct traffic from people reading
your article but also has the added benefit of increasing
search engine ranking.

Above all it is very important to keep in mind that no
matter what traffic generation techniques you are using you
should always be carefully tracking each of your traffic
sources to make sure that it is profitable otherwise you
can end up feeding an alligator which delivers low quality
traffic that won't convert. With the availability of
software tools on the market today like Google analytics
this task is incredibly easy to do.

Last Sunday I launched a new solow contest and I mentioned

How do you choose a good password?

Most people use passwords that are based on personal
information and are easy to remember. However, that also
makes it easier for an attacker to guess or "crack" them.
Consider a four-digit PIN number. Is yours a combination of
the month, day, or year of your birthday? Or the last four
digits of your social security number? Or your address or
phone number? Think about how easily it is to find this
information out about somebody. What about your email
password—is it a word that can be found in the dictionary?
If so, it may be susceptible to "dictionary" attacks, which
attempt to guess passwords based on words in the
dictionary.

Although intentionally misspelling a word ("daytt" instead
of "date") may offer some protection against dictionary
attacks, an even better method is to rely on a series of
words and use memory techniques, or mnemonics, to help you
remember how to decode it. For example, instead of the
password "hoops," use "IlTpbb" for "[I] [l]ike [T]o [p]lay
[b]asket[b]all." Using both lowercase and capital letters
adds another layer of obscurity. Your best defense, though,
is to use a combination of numbers, special characters, and
both lowercase and capital letters. Change the same example
we used above to "Il!2pBb." and see how much more
complicated it has become just by adding numbers and
special characters.

Don't assume that now that you've developed a strong
password you should use it for every system or program you
log into. If an attacker does guess it, he would have
access to all of your accounts. You should use these
techniques to develop unique passwords for each of your
accounts.

Here is a review of tactics to use when choosing a
password:

Strengthen Your Blog In a Single S.W.O.T.

Is there anything that could be improved on the blog your
run? Do you even know if there is something that needs to
be improved? Try taking the MBA stance by performing a
S.W.O.T on the blog to get to what really needs adjustment?
Now what the heck is S.W.O.T you say? All it is, is an
acronym for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and
threats. Just about every Fortune 500 company you can think
of performs this self check to see where they stand so why
shouldn't you?

Get started by taking a look and jotting down your
strengths. Are you proficient in online marketing? Are you
producing high quality products? You may find that you
undervalue your business. Performing this piece of the
analysis should give you a mental boost when it comes to
progress you have made in the time your business has been
up and running.

The next piece may be a little painful at first however, it
will help you strengthen your weakest links. Where are your
weaknesses? Are you posting infrequently? Are you producing
enough products? Is your article writing campaign building
back links? Each weakness recorded is also a chance to
enhance your current business plan so be certain to be as
thorough as possible.

Now that your weaknesses are recorded it is time to turn
them into opportunities in the next portion of your
S.W.O.T. analysis. You will want to review your weaknesses
as well as any other opportunities that come to mind. Is it
possible to expand your product line? Is it an option to
offer some services in addition to the products offered?
Can you expand your target market to build additional
profits? Are you relying on pay per click to draw in
visitors? Can you implement more permanent forms of
marketing? Continue to ask yourself questions and answer
them as intricately as possible to get the best possible
rewards.

The grand finale is analyzing the potential threats that
could wipe out your business or decrease its overall value.
Are there similar blogs to your own? Could the products on
these blogs cut into you profits? Have you created such a
narrow marketing scope that your customers are a small few?
Are you losing money on pay per click campaigns? The more
threats identified the easier it will be to contingency
plan and bullet proof your business. Take these
observations as an opportunity to differentiate and break
away from the pack. Every few months rinse and repeat this
cycle to stay on top of your business.
